Building a family (dream home included).
Telling/writing your life story
…THEY’RE STILL WITHIN YOUR REACH!
In my early 30’s, when I was broke and broken, I decided to change my story.
I was 33 and at the lowest point of my life. I could not admit to myself or anyone else that I was broke (financially) and broken (spiritually).
I was hiding in plain site but the pain would ooze (more like booze) out of me. I had a drinking problem. I got 2 DUI’s. MY LIFE WAS A MESS.
The true low point was working a low level job in LA making next to nothing. The owner of the company approached me one day and made a request, “Sanyika, I want you to stop using your first name because it confuses clients.” My response was “What the @$!#[email protected]!?!?!?” That day the owner and I argued but that night I was in tears.
I couldn’t believe I let my life get to the point where the last thing I owned, my identity, was being threatened.
So at that point, I DECIDED TO CHANGE MY STORY!
I watched motivational videos, read books and consumed content every day to see people make it to the top from a personal rock bottom. The thing that transformed me the most during this period of time was the stories. Those stories gave me the perfect amount of entertainment, information and inspiration to feel like “if they can find a way up, I can too.”Then it hit me. Maybe the starting point in my journey (and any journey) is finding the courage to TELL MY STORY!
I was inspired to do 3 things:
- TELL MY STORY to myself and anyone else that would listen.
- Embrace my failures, take pride in my accomplishments and validate the dreams from my story to FIND MY FIRE.
- Strengthen my belief in myself, devour knowledge and seek mentorship to realize I can also LIGHT UP THE WORLD!!!
Following those 3 steps helped me to become a….
Then I Remembered:
The COURAGE it took to move to LA from Washington DC and pursue a career in entertainment.
The TALENT required to book 5 nationally televised acting jobs (film, tv & commercials)
The BADASSERY required to quit acting and pursue my natural talents of writing & performing.
The PERSERVERANCE required to get signed to a label on Universal Music Group
The SKILL required to write chart topping songs for artists like Nick Lachey/98 Degrees and Too Short.
I remembered to not see my life through the story of my failures.
Most importantly I realized my life’s purpose, lighting the fire within myself to ultimately light the fire in others.
